BACK TO THE FUTURE

Past Masters Old Links Golf looks back in time to contribute to a more eco-friendly golfing future

Hickory golf brings together all people who love to play the game, whatever their abilities, standard, age, gender, colour or creed. No modern equipment gives the feel of a hickory shaft as it swings and hits a drive, a pitch or a putt. Golfers who play the hickory game are joining a long and valued tradition and are supporting a greener and more healthy environment in the process.

Our clubs were made in the first half of the twentieth century and are now being restored for play using eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient methods and renewable resources. It is over 70 years since any fossil fuels were used to forge the iron blades.

Where the old shafts are not suitable for play new ones are fitted from renewable hickory coppices in Tennessee, U.S.A. Old or broken shafts are re-cycled to create pens, atomisers and paper knives.

Grips using reclaimed leather are fitted over underlisting made from scrap cotton materials. Even the whipping used to secure the grips and wood heads is made from natural flax from Ireland.

Worldwide, hickory golf relies on small scale, low maintenance workshops with craftsmen reviving the traditional methods of clubmaking and creating new skilled opportunities for work.

Hickory golf does not need to be played on courses which require the intensive use of pesticides, fertilisers and watering nor bulldozing and complete re-sculpturing of the landscape. Many gems of natural course architecture amid the dunes of Great Britain and Ireland which are considered outdated, too short for today's distance-oriented equipment, come stunningly back into their own and can be played and enjoyed as they were envisaged by those early great architects and players of our illustrious game.
